[comp.dcom.lans] FDDI interfaces and bridges : summary

anido@otc.oz (Gary Anido) (12/22/87)

A few weeks ago I asked for information regarding implementations
(preferably board-level) of FDDI interfaces for Ethernet, Token Ring
and so on. Now that responses have essentially ceased I will provide
a summary. First off, however, I wish to thank those who replied to
my request for information:

1.	Fibronics (617) 778-0700 have announced an FDDI product
called FX80000 which interfaces to 802.3 LANs. It is apparently
	a multiple-board product built into a VME sub-rack. Discrete
logic is used while the FDDI standards are in flux. Cost
is reported to be us$39,000 plus us$3,200 for each additional
	Ethernet interface.

2.	The AMD FDDI chipset should be available in quantity in first
quarter 88, with products appearing mid-88. There is some
confusion as to whether all five chips of the AMD chipset will,
	in fact, be buyable.

3.	The AMD chipset is, at this time, the only FDDI silicon. Presumably
other chip manufacturers are not too far behind.

4.	A number of companies (including Cisco Systems and Proteon) are
planning FDDI products when the standards are finalised.

Note that I have not confirmed the information contained in all the replies.
I would be pleased if inaccuracies are brought to my attention.
