We have a department on campus that wants to network 5 IBM PCs together for the sole purpose of being able to share Lotus 123 data files. They would like to use a thin-wire Ethernet system, because one day they hope to bridge into the campus-wide broadband Ethernet backbone. But for the time being, what they want is to be able to have one PC be the `server' that will be used to create and modify Lotus files. The `client' PCs will only examine - not modify the servers files. What I would like is software that behaves like the IBM PC Local Area Network package. It uses NETBIOS to create virtual drives on the clients that reference disks and/or directories on the server, so everything is transparent to these non-computer types. They just tell Lotus that the data file are on drive <whatever>: and off it goes. My question is: Is there any ethernet-based software to do this? I would prefere to use the Western Digital W8003E cards (less $$), but the 3Com 3C501 cards are also in use here, so anything that would work on them would be great. For that matter, ANY combo of software and hardware will be considered, as this department has buck$ and they're ready to spend some. So the software need not be in the public domain - commercial products are welcome. Please e-mail all responses to me, and if there is enough interest from others, I'll post a summary to the net. Thanx in advance for any replies I may receive. -- Michael Nora | Internet: mwn@beach.cis.ufl.edu University of Florida | UUCP: ...ihnp4!codas!uflorida!beach.cis.ufl.edu!mwn Data & Video Network | MaBellNet: (904) 335-8300
