At various times on this newsgroup people have put out a list of recognised Ethernet protocol types. None of them that I have seen have mentioned type 8019: who knows what it is? Why am I interested? Well, I have been exposed in the past to TCP/IP broadcast storms, but now I have seen what looks like an 8019 multicast storm. At a particular time many Ethernet addresses (all addresses in the 08001Exxxxxx range) started throwing out very many multicast packets to address 09001E000000. Since (of course) there is no monitor yet known to man which will decide when something is NOT normal, and keep a record of the abnormal situation, I am reduced to trying to work out what MIGHT have happened. Therefore, if anyone knows all about this multicast address, and any way in which such a multicast storm could be started, I would be delighted to hear from them. Of course, even better would be how to avoid it ever getting started!
