At a conference I attended some time ago someone displayed a diagram that gave file sizes in one column, transmission rates in a second column, and times-to-transmit in a third column. The scales were such that if you drew a line from a file size in column one to a transmission rate in column two and extended the line to column three, you'd have the total time taken to transmit that file at that rate. I'd like to put a copy of this in my computer center newsletter to accompany a discussion about transmission speeds on networks. See the last few issues of IEEE Communications Magazine. The chart you are referring to (I think) is the Gordon Bell Nomogram. If it isn't in IEEE Communications, then try IEEE Network.
