[comp.dcom.lans] Sytek 8080 ethernet bridge

merlin@hqda-ai.UUCP (David S. Hayes) (02/25/88)

We are rewiring one of the Pentagon data networks. The new
network is running ethernet packets on a broadband cable. I want
to connect to this. I've been told to get a Sytek 4520 ether
modem (acts as the broadband transceiver) and a Sytek 8080 bridge.

Has anyone out there used this equipment, particularly the
8080 bridge? How well did it work?

     Thanks,

I've no direct experience with Sytek. But I have worked with broadband
equipment. I would venture a guess that the Ethermodem looks like a
transciever, so you need some sort of router or bridge to connect your
local segment. Presumably (though Sytek obviously wants to sell you one
of theirs) you can use any manufacturer that strikes your fancy.

If you need a simple repeater or bridge, you should be able to use
standard CATV head end equipment (Scientific Atlanta, etc.).
