If you want to spend no money for a fairly reasonable book on
configuring a Ethernet call up your DEC salesman and ask for
the Network and Communications Buyers Guide.  Just remember that
you are under no obligation to buy the parts from DEC.

Especially if you don't feel like paying $15 for a T connector.  (the
thing that goes between your controller and the two pieces of coax)

Hey, they've got to make up the cost of the books somehow.  Actually,
now that they've increased the University discount, some of their prices
are better than some of the other brands we've been using.
