There is a software only network analyzer called LAN Patrol that runs on top of standard network interface cards (Ethernet: Interlan, 3Com; Starlan: AT&T). The package can analyze 8,000 packets/sec using Interlan's NI-5210 on an AT-class machine. Network traffic is analyzed from a 15K tsr driver, so a dedicated PC is *NOT* required. The package keeps individual statistics for every station that accesses the LAN (1024 max). Statistics are kept for total packets, total bytes, time of first and last activity, and last station communicated with. There is also the capability to trace activity in minute-by minute and hour-by-hour increments. The software can be used to diagnose faults, monitor performance, detect intruders, etc. The package goes for $495; for more information you can contact the vendor directly: Legend Software (201) 227-8771.
