I am trying to use a sun 3/160 for a nameserver on my local net. I created an /etc/named.boot and /etc/named.db as the man page for named(8) says, and edited /etc/rc to start /usr/etc/in.named. All workes fine for my pc's and other unix boxes I configured to use the name server. The problem is I can't get the sun to use itself! I do not want to have to maintain the nameserver data base PLUS /etc/hosts on the sun. The reason I want to use the nameserver is so I don't have to maintain /etc/hosts. The sun manuals all seem to assume you are in a network of suns and are using yellow pages to maintain /etc/hosts. Of the 30 plus nodes on our local net, only two are suns. However, only the suns have the ability to be a nameserver, all of the other nodes just know how to use one if it exists. I tried creating the file /etc/resolv.conf, but it didn't help. I would appreciate any information on setting up the sun as a nameserver, and specifically how to tell it to use itself for resolving host names.
