[comp.dcom.lans] Gateway between 3Com 3+mail and Unix mail?

matthew@uvabick.UUCP (Matthew D. Lewis) (02/10/89)

Hello! Here at the University of Amsterdam we have use 3Com networking
software on both our PCs and Macs. We also have a couple of Unix boxes
on the Ethernet, and a FastPath to connect the Phonenet to the Ethernet.

Has anyone worked out a way to gateway 3+mail to Unix, and vica-versa? It
would be really nice to still be able to use 3+mail, which our PC users
are accustomed to using, and still talk to the wider world.

Thanks in advance....

Okay, here is what you need, (i've done it, and I know others who have
as well)

the 3+MAIL application library and documentation.
lots and lots of time.
MSC 5.0 or better
even more time.
a dedicated pc to use as a mail server.

Once you have screamed at 3com long enough and have "obtained" the
afformentioned software, you will need to spend eons of time
expermenting with the library routines since they don't
work like they are documented.

What you then need to write is something that will connect
to a "unix" box via the port on the pc and dig up/parse
the mail on that side and feed it to the 3com apps stuff.

Next you will need to call the little function that gets mail
for you from the 3mail server. Scan thru your mail directory
move the files over to unix, parse up the files and pass
them off to the unix mailer.

Sorry I can't be more specific, its quite an involved project,
if you have a not-so general question about the gateway send mail
to the addresses below and I will try to answer it.

Also, don't even consider attempting this with out a good
working knowledge of C, Unix mailers, and MooseDos. Even
with the above, the project is guaranteed to cause massive
headaches. ;-) There are myrads of little gotchas that
3com has, like messages can't be bigger than ~ 32k, etc.
Discovering all of them is great fun. (groan)

Sorry, I can't provide source, cuz I left it with the company
I used to work for. I checked before I wrote this and they
used the hard drive that the source was on for yet another
network disk to store more games on.

As an alternative, you might look into AT&T's StarMail, which I
understand runs on (certain) 3Com LAN versions. Combined with their
AccessPlus (on the PC) and PMX (on 3Bs) software, gateways are provided
(I hear) for both "normal" UNIX mail and the ATTMAIL "cloud".

I have not spoken to anyone who has it running on a 3Com LAN, but it
might provide the solution you are looking for. At least in a "pure"
AT&T hardware environment, the products provide a consistent user
interface for both PC and terminal users, binary attachments, etc.
