I am interested in getting information on what other organizations have done to implement a large-scale, coprorate wide LAN. If people would mail me any help on this topic, I will summarize the results and post them. The basic requirement that we have is to connect all of our various computer systems together. This includes: # Computer Network ---------------------------------------- 700 Apollo Domain Token Ring 250 IBM PCs 3Com 100 Apple Mac AppleTalk 10 DEC VAX DECNet 5 Sun Ethernet TCP/IP and a couple of large IBM mainframes to be used as file/computer servers for all network devices. Applications that we need include: file transfer, remote terminal emulation, transparent file access, remote procedure calls, remote backups, mail, and remote printing. Our current thinking is to at least standardize on TCP/IP as the protocol and allow whatever transport media (Ethernet, token ring, etc.) to run the traffic on and to use NFS for transparent file access between machines. Any information, experiences, war-stories, or other data of interest would be greatly appreciated.
