[comp.dcom.lans] Backup schemes for Novell Networks

george@beach.cis.ufl.edu (Stephanie George) (03/28/89)

I have a clone '386 with a 300 Mb drive as the dedicated server running Novell's
Netware 286. All of the clients of this beast are IBM Model 50s at the moment,
but I plan to expand to the hodge-podge of machines in another office soon.
Here's my dilemma: I have an Everex streaming tape backup system which I would
like to install in the server box in order to backup that huge disk. The
software that came with the streaming tape system runs under DOS, not NOS and
so is very useless (can't read the Novell Compsurf'ed disk).
I realize that these may not be the best hardware solutions available, but
they're what I've got to work with. Any ideas of software that would allow
Novell NOS to recognize the tape system in its server & backup the server
system disk? Anyone else have this sort of problem?
Or, if the hardware that I have is totally useless in my server, any
recommendations of resonable hardware/software for backup on Novell servers?

Of all the Novell networks I've seen, the backup unit is connected to
a workstation, usually the administrators. The server is kept out of
sight and usually not touched.

Most tape streamer documentation include instructions for Novell networks.
You generally have to install the streamer on one of the workstations of the
LAN and log as SUPERVISOR. I have personnally used a MOUNTAIN tape streamer
and it came with the software and documentation needed to backup a Novell
network. It was rather simple to use. You can backup the server while the
network is up and running. Any file that cannot be locked during the process
(because it is used by a client workstation) is listed in a special file and
you can ask the software to try again saving these files later on.

Hope this helps,
