[comp.dcom.lans] IEEE 802.3, Macintosh EtherTalk Card

paolo@ai-vie.UUCP (Paolo Petta) (04/05/89)

Since I have virtually no LAN programming experience
I would welcome *any* comments on the following problem:

We want to interface a Macintosh II to Elscint APEX machines

The LAN protocol for the APEX conforms to the following
standards:

data link IEEE 802.3, IEEE 802.2 LLC Class 1
network Class 3 Connectionless Network Services
            ISO standard 8473 protocols
            the apex configuration implements the
"NULL2" service of the network layer
utilizing map 2.1 subnet and area
            addressing (restricted to single subnetwork
            operations)
transport ISO 8073 Class 4 protocol for virtual circuit
            services

The questions is:
Is it possible to use a Macintosh EtherTalk card for this
connection? Is this card (and/or its driver) compatible
to IEEE 802.3 - that is, does it suffice to assemble a
packet in the correct format (Preamble, SFD, DA, SA,
LLC Data length, LLC Data, Pad & FrameCheck) and then invoke
the ETCall routine (after having installed an appropriate
listener for such 802.3 packets)? I guess this is an issue
since IEEE MAUs define additional signals in respect to
EtherNet, like Jabber.
If the EtherTalk card is a "no-no", is there any product
which will supply the needed functionality?

Again: *any* comments, hints, pointers, etc. are welcome;
Thank You for your trouble...
