[comp.dcom.lans] Decserver 100 initialization

hubey@pilot.njin.net (Hubey) (05/01/89)

I have a question on the initialization that a DECserver 100 goes
thorugh when it is turned off and on. We have a DECnet system on
campus. One of the terminal servers does not seem to be aware of the
existence of one of the hosts (which is running Ultrix). The system
administrator claims that a host is supposed to broadcast it address
(i.e. its existence).. It seems like there are other ways that the
initialization process can be done. One of the hosts might send the
host table to the Decserver when it comes on line.

I cannot get access to the Ultrix machine through this particular
Decserver and I don't know what the answer is. Can anyone help.

Once the DECserver is loaded it starts to listens to service advertisements
(mutlicasted to 09-00-2b-00-00-0f). Each host periodicly sends an
advertisement for the services it support. By listening to these
advertisements, the DECserver builds a table of what services are available
on the LAN.

Now the DS100 doesn't have much memory so it remembers less services than a
DS200 would. If you have lots of LAT hosts, you may be exceeding the memory
limits of the DS100. Setting the port to autoconnect enabled and then trying
to connect (this tell the DECserver to listen for that service and connect
you when hear its advertisement).

You could also be having a problem with group codes. If the set of group
codes for the DECserver doesn't intersect the set of group codes offered by
the host, you will never the advertisement or be denied access to the
service.
