I have a Novell 2.0a network which I would like to upgrade to 2.15 SFT. My question is this: what is the best way to transfer the data files from the old (286) server to the new (386) one? Is it possible to have the two servers on the network at the same time and transfer the files directly from one to the other, even though they are different Novell versions? Which driver software would I use in the workstations while doing this, the old 2.0a drivers or the 2.15 SFT drivers? Can I upgrade the old server to 2.15, and then copy the files? This would seem to be a violation of the liscence agreement. Since it is only for a short time during installation, does it count as acceptable use? Do I really have to do a backup of the system & then restore it on the new server? My tape backup unit doesn't back up the binderly files, but BINDFIX does. Can I use the same version of BINDFIX that works on 2.0a to load the bindery into 2.15? Any other ideas will be most certainly entertained. Thanks alot!!!!!! Dan benderly@cs.columbia.edu P.S. If an interest is shown, I will summarize to the net

I'm following up to this because of the number of Novell postings. I too have run into this dilema of transferring from one server to another. If you put both servers on the same network you can log into both at once (doesn't matter which shell, use the latest one, 2.15), and then copy the files (use ncopy) from one server to the other. Then use LARCHIVE SYSTEM to backup the first server (to local hard disk), but do not select any files to backup. Then LRESTORE SYSTEM to the other server. If you have two workstations you can run both at once. I moved about 30MB of files and trustee rights in about 10 minutes. Did it from Netware 86 2.0a to Netware 286 2.12. -- Tim Lange. Purdue U.
