[comp.dcom.lans] bridges and routers anyone ???

jpdia@mbunix.mitre.org (Januario P. Dia ) (08/23/89)

I'm not sure if someone has already asked this before, but ...

Our group is in the process of evaluating network bridges and routers for
use in implementing a campus-wide Ethernet network. Unfortunately (or
fortunately), the list of candidate products is quite large, and we would
like to "narrow it down" somewhat...

Does anyone out there in net.land have any information/recommendations/
comments/war stories on specific bridges or routers ?

We are looking for high performance devices (at least 10,000 packets per
second switching speed/filtering rate), which connect locally over a
baseband or broadband Ethernet network. Other operational capabilities
which would be considered would be security and network management
features.

Products without a built-in network management system would still be
considered strong candidates provided they have the means of integrating
third-party network management systems (ie. Wollongong WIN/MGT, etc.)
into their product. Although standards-based implementations of network
management (eg. SNMP, etc.) are preferred, exceptional proprietary
network management products would be acceptable.

Thanks so much for any suggestions or comments. You may send responses
to me via e-mail to jpdia@mbunix.mitre.org if it's convenient, or you
may post it over the net. I will post a summary of the comments received
if there is an overwhelming interest in it.

thanks,

jay
