[comp.dcom.lans] Need replacement for Intel 82502

stevel@eleazar.dartmouth.edu (Steve Ligett) (09/13/89)

Dear Abby:

I recently found out that Intel is discontinuing production of their
D82502 Ethernet transceiver chip. (Apparently, we're the last ones in
the world to find out.) They are sending me a copy of their "Dear
Customer" letter, and information on changing to the AMD 7996, I
believe.

We've grown quite fond of the Intel chip, and are wondering what other
choices we might have. One characteristic of the 82502 that we (ab)use
is that by swapping one resistor, we can change our transceiver from
"standard Ethernet" to our non-standard "Ethernet", where we run on 75
ohm coax, over distances exceeding 3000 feet without repeaters.

What should we do?

Dismayed.
