[comp.dcom.lans] THICKNET between buildings

rnicovic@polyslo.CalPoly.EDU (Ralph Nicovich) (10/03/89)

I know this question has been asked before, but recently the issue came
up again.

I have users in three separate buildings that are next to each other. Each
is no more than 400 (cable) feet from the center one. The users wish
to interconnect the buildings with "ethernet". My suggestion was to use
a Cabletron twisted pair repeater. I wanted to stay away from a real
"yellow" ethernet because I believe there is a very real ground loop
safety issue when doing this. I believe it is against the national
electric code to do this since Ethernet is suppose to be grounded
only in one place, and not at the entrance of each building. Note that
the buildings are a machine shop, an ag. engr. building (welding, tractors
etc.) and a lecture building.

It would help if I could get responses from people that have had
experiences with this (good or bad). Also any real live info on
the safety issue, that I can forward to the people that really make
the decision.

Thanks in advance,
