[comp.dcom.lans] Networking alternatives

peiffer@umn-cs.CS.UMN.EDU (Tim J. Peiffer) (10/27/89)

With all of the talk of Ethernet alternatives, and serial line multiplexing,
I would like to find out the status of projects such as SLIP with reference
to workstation devices such as IBM PCs, Macintosh's, and Sun's. I have heard
that device drivers work for these, but I have not seen a complete
implementation yet. Can anybody point me to them?

I would like to make use of an existing slip network driver such as an
Annex II terminal server to expand our building network out to remote research
sites, giving our Prof's and grad students the horsepower and flexibility
of ethernet without the expense and bother of leased line or ethernet. Another
possibility I am interested in is making a MacII as a router between a slip
gateway and his localtalk net.
