My guess about the problem with 3c501s and fast servers would be the small buffer on the 3c501. The 3c501 cannot handle back to back packets coming in and probably don't get them when the server is throttled back to 8MHz and are overrun by packets when the server is running full speed. I have seen problems like this before with other products.
