[comp.dcom.lans] novell with tcpip

pcb@gator.usl.edu (Peter C. Bahrs) (01/12/90)

I have netware 286 on IBM PS/2s 70 and 80s. We also have a bunch of
TCP/IP software (ftp, telnet, rexec, ping...) that runs but not with
netware 286 ipx, net3 (int2f netbios) drivers running. Any ideas?

We want to be able to send and receive files from outside the logical
net (i.e. to the unix machines hanging off the wire). Does anyone know
of some tcp/ip software that will run under netware 286?

Yes. You need to use the Clarkson packet drivers, the BYU packet driver IPX,
and one of Phil Karn's code (free for .edu sites), PC-IP compiled for the
packet drivers, or Clarkson's NCSA Telnet. All of these are available by
archive-server or FTP from sun.soe.clarkson.edu.

Peter..

Novell offers a TCP/IP product for PC's (both DOS and OS/2) and MAcintosh
that allow concurrent TCP/IP and Netware connectivity transparently.

The product family is called LAN WorkPlace and it includes all standard TCP/IP
suite of protocols, RFC complinat NetBIOS, and telnet (vt100/220, tn3270 etc.)
More details/ data sheets etc. can be had from (408) 434 2300

We seem to be having some difficulty with getting a product that will
support Appleshare on a Novell file server, and still do proper Ethernet
framing. I flatly refuse to permit any non-standard framing on the
University computer network, and the major issue in this area is the Novell
packet framing which uses the 802.3 header format but does not include an
802.2 header. I anticipate that if this becomes established here it will
lead to major problems when we start implementing the ISO protocols, probably
this year sometime. The Novell ECONFIG option, where available, does give
Ethernet standard framing, but there seems to be some conflict between
Appleshare support and ECONFIG.

We're having no problem with two ECONFIG'd Novell file servers, and
an ECONFIG'd Ethernet/Appletalk bridge. The servers are 2.15C and 3.0.

I can personnaly attest to the LAN Workplace package. I have setup
configurations where I have a Novell ethernet network running LAN
Workplace software to access UNIX hosts.

All pc's can simultaneousely access both the Novell server & peripherals
as well as any of the UNIX hosts using TELNET & FTP. This product
was designed by Excelan and was so good that Novell bought the company.

I use the LAN Workplace package even when not connected to a Novell
network. It's how I have my PC on the net.
