[comp.dcom.lans] VMSmail to MHS gateway?

jsa00564@uxa.cso.uiuc.edu (01/18/90)

Hello everyone out there in net.land!

I have a question, and really don't know who would be the best person
to ask.. Believe me, I've already tried the obvious ones..

The configuration:
  A PC LAN with 80ish nodes running Netware/286. A VAX 8530 (VMS 5.1) is
connected via ethernet to the LAN, using Interconnection's TES (Terminal
Emulation Services, PC users can become VAX terms. over the net). All
users uses VMSmail for email.

The question:
I would like to install an MHS compatible mail system on the PC's
preferably DaVinci eMail. Reason? PC users only see their email now
when the log into the VAX, and depending on the user, that could be several
days, or even weeks... An email system on the LAN would provide instant
mail notification, etc. So, I need a mail gateway to get VMSmail packets
to MHS on the Novell LAN. This way PC users and VAX (terminal-only) users
can mail each other, hopefully transparently.
I have talked to Joiner & Assoc., who can do it for >$30,000. CC:Mail
has their own gateway for cc:mail, and another to MHS, so it will supposedly
work the way I want for ~$5000. However, I'd like to find a way that is
both inexpensive (ie <$10,000), and one that maintains some kind of standard
on both ends.. But cheap would be good enough......
