Sorry if this topic has been kicked to death in earlier discussions but I'd really like to solicit anecdotes or recommendations concerning buying third party RAM and hard disks for Sun's SPARC workstations and servers. For example, it has been pointed out to us that by buying RAM chips from Allegiance Group Inc. and a Fujitsu 2-Gigabyte SMD hard disk and controller from Fast Access, we can save close to $30,000 on a SPARCserver 370 with equivalent Sun equipment. This kind of savings seems almost unbelievable, so I imagine there must be a catch. First thing that comes to mind is, what kind of reliability and maintenance service can one expect on these third party systems? Also, what kinds of conflicts should one expect between Sun and the third party vendors when it comes to service? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. --patrick goebel: romeo@lindy.stanford.edu
