For those who were interested in the problems I had running a small LANtastic network (the two Zenith Z248's kept going to sleep and "dropping off" without warning), we believe we've solved the problem. Early on, I suspected a faulty NIC (the cards were Artisoft's AE2 Ethernet cards), so I swapped two of them. It turns out I swapped the two (out of seven) faulty NICs that we had, and they both happened to be installed in the Zenith machines. Go figure. Anyway, some more rigorous swapping identified the two NICs as flaky, and they've been returned for exchange. The Zeniths have been up and running smoothly with different NICs ever since. It was sheer coincidence that led me to attribute the problem to the Zenith hardware. But I don't apologize to ZDS. It keeps them honest. And Yes, I'd certainly buy their hardware again!
