[comp.dcom.lans] OIPX and TCP/IP concurrently

nrm1989@dsacg2.dsac.dla.mil (Christine E. Frisinger) (06/29/90)

We resently acquired a new office and have been told to make them
technically compatible with our systems. They currently have a
server (Samsung) with Novell Netware 2.1.2 running over Arcnet; and
they have 16 Z-248 pcs connected via Arcnet to this Novell Server.
We are to convert them to TCP/IP running on Ethernet.

We'd like to put the TCP/IP down to the pc level to give the pcs the
total protocol suite (such as telnet, ftp, nfs, etc ...), so we'd
like to avoid just putting a gateway or bridging board in the Novell
Server if possible. Our idea is to recable the Server and 16 pcs for
Ethernet and put Ethernet controller boards in the Server and pcs.
We would then load Sun's PC-NFS onto the 16 pcs and have them boot
between the drivers necessary to load PC-NFS (TCP/IP) or the Novell
(IPX).

We believe this will work; however, since we don't have it currently
running anywhere we'd like someone who has seen it work (or who knows
beyond a shadow of a doubt that it will work) to PLEASE let us know
if we can do this. Someone expressed an opinion to us that this would
not work--this person felt that it would be a problem to run IPX and
TCP/IP on the same physical network without a bridge or gateway. We
are confused and need help because we thought if everthing was running
standard Ethernet (the physical layers) that the upper layers (IPX and
TCP/IP) would be okay on the same network.
