[comp.dcom.lans] What makes a lan application a lan application.

What are the characteristics of a lan application ( a lan version of an    
application such as lotus) ?  Is it file or record locking or are there
other characteristics needed for an application to successfully run on a lan?
Most of the articles I have read mention record or file locking, but nothing
else.  I would appreciate any mail or replies on this topic....
