[comp.dcom.lans] Network software recommendations

dnb@fltk.UUCP (David Buonomo) (07/10/90)

I have a few 3Com 3C500 (or 3C501) Ethernet cards and need to put together
a 3-5 node network. The software is the EtherSeries from 3Com (vintage 1985)
and from what I have been told has been a problem to administer, use, etc.
I would like to use this existing hardware with new network software and would
like some recommendations as to what to look at. I have recently installed a
small LanTastic network and the functionality that it provided was fine. This
is one product that we are looking at, they just don't provide the drivers
for 3Com hardware.

The machines are a mix of AT/286's and XT's. I would like to use one of the
286's as a non-dedicated server and share the devices on that machine with
the other machines. We're not doint anything fancy -- just need to share a
large disk, printer, etc. Add-on's like mail, etc. are not really necessary
but would be nice if they came with the package. Something that is easily
installed and administered is desirable.

Also, any comments about the 3C500 cards are welcome. Are they any good?

Thanks in advance for any help.
