[comp.dcom.lans] CheaperNet over TwistedPair PBX lines?

raisch@convex.msu.edu (R. Raisch) (07/20/90)

This is the deal:
We have a twistedPair 6conductor phone system with a separate
buss for network use. The phone company (Northern Telecom)
swears up and down that it is possible to run Cheapernet over
twisted pair by simply connecting the Cheapernet card in a PC
to a "Balun" that converts the signal to twisted pair signal
values. I have yet to see this work with anything but Appletalk.
Question:
Has anyone in net land done this, or something close?
Disclaimer:
I am an Electronics Pheeb. I can program, and think, (sometimes
at the same time), but electrons are complete BlackMagic to me.

Thanks for your time. -raisch

(If there is enough interest, I'll post a summary, so mail, don't post.)

We have been experimenting with using baluns at our branch campus. So far,
we have not been able to get it working reliably. I dont know if the distance
is too far, or whether the cable is bad somewhere (inconceivable since it's
all brand new). Our phone jacks in every room has an IBM type 2 connector
(ie: Tokenring) and our baluns are designed to convert 50 ohm ethernet to
the tokenring connector. If anybody else out there has experimented with
using a baluns, I would appreciate some help too. We just havent had any luck
yet!
