[comp.dcom.lans] Sources of information on network setup and operation

gary@sci34hub.UUCP (Gary Heston) (08/09/90)

Greetings. I'm looking for information on the setup, configuration,
operation, and maintenance of networks using EtherNet and TCP/IP under
UNIX; how to connect such a network to a Novell network; communicating
between the two worlds (yeah, I know, but the boss says I have to :-) );
and generally learning how to do all this stuff.

I've been working with UNIX systems as an admin for about 2.5 years, but
haven't had any exposure to real networking, and only a hazy ideal of
how it all works. I have a copy of the ISC 386/ix TCP/IP Guide, which
I'm trying to read here at work (with interruptions every ten minutes,
of course) and I picked up a copy of Internetworking with TCP/IP last
night (which I'll read at home, where I don't have to unlock someones'
port every time I turn around).

Are there any other books which would be a good intro or reference?
I'm not concerned with the details of how a transceiver works, what
an EtherNet packet looks like, or the transmission characteristics
of thick cable. I need to learn how to net together three or more
UNIX machines, and tie into a Novell network; how to troubleshoot
problems; set up print servers accessible to both; and so on.

Seminars and training are out of reach, since the top management
decided such things are a waste of money (which is why I had to
buy my own books about Novell stuff... which'll leave with me, just
like my UNIX books...). I need things I can get at a reasonable
cost and read as I have a chance.

Catalogs of hardware and parts would be helpful, because I know
virtually nothing about what's out there. I won't be dealing with
mainframes (yet), just smaller systems. I have nobody around here
to ask questions of, so you'll probably hear a bunch of those
from me in the future. If there's a FAQ posting for this group,
I'll watch for it (otherwise, maybe I could just save all the
dumb questions I ask and make one from the answers :-) ).

Any suggestions on getting started in this area would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks....

Gary
