[comp.dcom.lans] Questions about Sun SLIP

[This is sort of directed at Geoff Arnold, but anyone who's
knowledgeable in this area is invited to respond.]

I've been asked to look into getting SLIP running on a Sun-4
running SunOS 4.1. We have the Sun SLIP distribution provided
with PC-NFS 3.0.1.

The examples in the PC-NFS Serial Communications Guide all show
configurations where the sl0 interface has its own Class C
network number. Since we're Internet-connected, we can't just
"make up" network numbers on a whim, nor would we want to have to
allocate a new network number for a handful of machines, not to
mention the "expense" of reconfiguring all the upstream IP
gateways to route for another network.

What would it take to do the following:
	1) Configure sl0 to use a 4-bit subnet of the Class B
network currently being used (unsubnetted) by an
	   existing Ethernet interface on the same machine;
	2) provide proxy ARP on the Ethernet side for addresses
	   on the SLIP side?

I'm hoping someone else has done this... (no, I don't read the
Sun-specific lists).
