[comp.dcom.lans] LAT protocol

vatsan@risky.Convergent.COM (Srivatsan Kasturi) (09/07/90)

Iam looking for LAT protocol developed by DEC ( Once upon a time
proprietary). I see the entries for LAT in /etc/netconfig file. Could anyone
give details on the protocol or direct me for some technical documents.

		Thanks in advance.

Not only proprietary but patented. When you license the patent from DEC I
think they will probably tell you how to implement it.

Note by the way that you probably can't patent a network protocol. I
believe the LAT patent claims that some of the techniques used in the
protocol are novel, and those techniques are being patented.
Presumably they would have to be licensed from DEC even if used in a
different protocol.

Soderblom would beg to differ (802.5). There's a lot of token ring vendors
(including IBM) that have paid him big bucks for a patent that describes some
sort of token passing protocol.
