[comp.dcom.lans] WORM/ERASEABLE OPTICLE STORAGE FOR NOVEL 386

davep@beav.UUCP (Dave Pifer) (09/20/90)

We have just begun the process of evaluating optical storage for our
Novell Netware386 LAN. Our need is for reliable archival storage.
What we'd like to do is put a WORM or ideally a write many version
thereof on the file server. Then, we'd run some database front end
that tracks where we're putting what so if we ever need it back we
can find it. As with most folks the need to retrieve said backups
is far less important than just knowing that they are there.

Our data load is not that great. We'd probably move a Gig or two of
data off to the optical drive in the course of a year, but most of this
would be in small manageable chunks.

The big question is which of the units on the market work best with
Netware386. I'd assume reliability of most units is nearly equal these
days but would appreciate any pointers or caveats to certain vendors.

Also, the database front end would not be a significant issue as we
can roll our own if need be. Buy man-months being what they are an
off-the-shelf package would be worth checking out as well if anyone
has had any experience.
