[comp.dcom.lans] Free NFS for PCs / several networks coexistance on same machine ?

otto@tukki.jyu.fi (Otto J. Makela) (12/06/90)

I have heard passing mentions to a free (either PD or FSF licence) version
of NFS, which would be run using packet drivers.
However, I have no details. Can somone point me to a ftp site ?

We've recently been experimenting with 3COM +Open network (LAN Manager based).
I'm not too keen on it, since it requires a dedicated server machine (running
OS/2), uses NetBIOS etc. but I must admit that the network interface is small
(about 64k or so) and it seems reasonably bomb-proof. Does anyone have ideas/
experience on running it simultaneously with TCP/IP stuff like NCSA Telnet.
I've messed around with it quite a while and it seems the makers were suffering
from the the-world's-an-ibm-pc-running-netbios syndrome. I've ended up with
two ethernet cards on my machine, one for NetBIOS and one for TCP/IP :-(

Can anyone tell me what difference does it make if I tell Windows3 about the
3COM network being installed, or not ? The people who loaned us the 3COM demo
machine told me that their own specialists had told that's it better NOT to
tell Windows about it (seemed there was some kind of problems).

Alas, it's an NFS *server*, not an NFS *client*. It's
sun.soe.clarkson.edu:pub/ka9q/*sos*.

We here are currently running 3Com 3+Open LAN Manager with 3Com own TCP/IP.
I have been fairly pleased with it. It requires no more than what it takes to
run the 3Com network. It also comes with most of the services offered by TCP:
telnet (with terminal emulation), ftp, ping, DNS, etc.
