[comp.dcom.lans] UPS's with EThernet TCP/IP interface for UNIX -- are there any?

bruce@balilly.UUCP (Bruce Lilly) (02/07/91)

There are a number of UPS's available with RS-232 interfaces to initiate
an orderly shutdown of a system upon power failure. I would much prefer an
UPS with an Ethernet interface, which could be used to initiate orderly
shutdown of several systems. In this way, one would only need one such
intelligent UPS for each independent power source, with other systems
which are being fed from the same source connected to simple UPS's (no
interface). No serial ports would be tied up on any of the machines.

1)	Does such a unit exist (I'm only interested in TCP/IP over Ethernet,
not Brand N network or Brand 3 network or anything else)?

2)	If so, what specific protocol is used? / If not, has anybody developed
a protocol which might be used for this application?

Thanks for any pointers,
