[comp.dcom.lans] Trying to install SCSI Controller in COMPAQ 386/33 Novell Server

phil@vaxwaller.UUCP (Phil Newton) (03/02/91)

I am attempting to install a Western Digital 7000-FASST SCSI controller
(that controls a Micropolis 1588 650MB SCSI disk drive) to our existing
Novell File Server, which is a COMPAQ 386/33 pc. The PC currently has
two internal 650MB ESDI disk drives that are controlled by COMPAQ's
internal disk controller. We are also using a 3COM 3C505 network interface
card in the server. NOTE: The 650MB ESDI disks are doing 'disk mirroring'.

I am trying to get to the point in the netgen of the O.S. where I have to
run "compsurf" on the new 650MB SCSI drive, but when I get to that point
in the netgen (i.e. after I've said "Netware Installation" and it goes and
looks at all the disk drives that are connected to the server), it does
NOT see the new 650MB SCSI drive, even though I've added it to the "select
network configurations" options of the netgen program. As far as I know,
I've done everything right -- when I "review Selected Configurations", this
is what I see:

	LAN A: 3COM 3C505 Etherlink Plus (Assy 2012 only) V2.30EC (880813)
		Option 7: IRQ=3, IO=310h, DMA 7

OS Type: SFT Netware and TCP/IP

	Communications Buffers: 40

Disk Channel 0: Industry Standard ISA or AT Comp. Disk Controller
		V2.01 (890810)
		Option 0: ISADISK PRIMARY Verify=ON I/O=1F0h IRQ=14

	Disk Channel 1: SDLP Multi-Controller Drive Version 3.35 (891221)
		Option 4: WD-7000 I/O=330h, IRQ=11, DMA=5

	Resource Set 1: COM1
		Option 0: Int. 4, I/O 3F8h-3FFh

	Resource Set 2: LPT1
		Option 0: IRQ=7, I/O Base = 378h

Resource Set 3: Enhanced Graphics Adaptor (uses IRQ 2)
Option 1: Attached to Monochrome Monitor

When I exit the netgen process at this point (without installing the updated
OSEXE-1 and OSEXE-2 diskettes, since the netgen program didn't see my new
SCSI drive), I get the following messages when I try to boot up from Novell:

(everything works fine until the very end...)

Abend: Timeout waiting for transmit to complete on 3C505 Etherlink
		Adaptor

	Running Process: BINDER

... and at that point, the server is dead.

Also, when I run the 3C505 diagnostics on the board itself (after I've booted
the server from a DOS diskette) WITH the SCSI controller still plugged into
the Motherboard, I get the following messages:

	Adapter self test .............. Passed!
	Preliminary Test 1 2 3 .... 10 Passed!
DMA Test 1 .. FIFO Loopback Data output... Failed!

I received this message earlier in the week and thus thought that the 3C505
board and the SCSI controller had a problem with their DMA settings, and so I
reconfigured netware again, but got the same scenerio.

If anyone out there has any helpful ideas to assist me in getting this
new SCSI controller working in my novell server, please email your responses
directly to me since I don't read these newsgroups too often.

Any assistance you could provide would be most apprciated!

Thank you!!
