[comp.dcom.lans] TCP/IP Weirdness on Large Network

phil@inetg1.Arco.Com (Phil Meyer) (03/07/91)

We have nearly 2,000 system on our EtherNet here. Lately we have been
experiencing some very strange behavior. Let me see if I can describe it.

Virtually over night, network performance will drop from sustained rates
of 200k to 2k or less, on certain hosts. This seems to be independant of the
carrier, ie: thinnet, synoptics, etc. We think we are close, and then the
problem 'moves' to another location. The condition will last several minutes,
to a day or two.

We have sniffers, and other analyzers, but we just can't seem to pin it down.
There is also no correlation to overall network traffic. One user came in at
4:00am to find her network performance had dropped out of sight. Now, two days
later, that workstation is humming along.

I have never seen this condition before, and it is driving me nuts!

If you have, please email me.

Thanks!
