[comp.dcom.lans] NFS Details/References Requested

darren@shapec.mdcbbs.com ((Darren Bolland)) (03/02/91)

Needed: NFS Details, Reports, References, Diagrams?

I'm currently doing some work with NFS. I would like to find out as much
about NFS as possible, to make sure that my investigation is complete.

I spoke to my local SUN Rep to see if they had anything that might help. All
they could suggest was the Sun Network Programming Manuals, and a single
White Paper that they had on Performance. Whilst these are quite useful, I
would like far more detail.

Don't SUN have any complete references available - They invented NFS didn't
they?

What I'm trying to do is to visualise the whole process that goes on in
the NFS - i.e Interaction with the various Daemons (nfsd, biod), RPC Calls,
Kernel Calls etc..(Diagrams would be nice!) What happens when you do an 'ls'
on a NFS File System - I have a Network Sniffer that I can use to get some
of this info. I'm also interested in File Locking, which we would like to use,
although I understand this has effects on Performance/Caching.

I've heard people talk about the NFS State Machine Model, and would be
interested in Details

Basically I would like pointers/references to *ANY* Documentation available,
and if you have any Papers Online I would be very grateful for them.

If there are details on ANON FTP Sites - I don't have access to Internet, so
if they are on Mail Servers all the better.

  Hope this Newsgroup can help

Regards,
Darren

Sun not only designed NFS, they wrote an RFC for it. It's #1094.
Anonymous ftp to nic.ddn.mil, cd to rfc: (the colon is important!),
and get rfc1094.txt.
