[comp.dcom.lans] licenseing software

brinich@keinstr.UUCP (Mark Brinich) (03/18/91)

We're in the process of putting together a PC LAN(Netware 3.11 or 3COM 3+ Open -don't
know which yet, but we're leaning towards Novell), and we're wondering what users out
there in the real world do for licenseing software on their LAN. For example, I have
40 potential users of Microsoft Project for Windows, but I know there will only be 2 or
3 users at any given time using the product(there are never more than 2 or 3 managers here
at a time, so I know this is the case). So do I get 40 copies of Project, or do I get
2 or 3 copies and run it through some metering software(I believe Sabre has something
to do this). Anyways, I'd appreciate any input........thanks.....mcb

What you are looking for is a product called a license server. It keeps
track of how many copies of a particular program may be running at any
one time. For Novell only a company called (i think) Rainbow Technologies
has such a product. I'm sketchy about it because I need something like
for TCP/IP on Ethernet and the product is only on Novell IPX networks
at present so I filed the info in volatile storage. But I remember I
called the company and they were in Southern California (seems I rememver
a 213 area code). Plus I found out about them through PC Week, the
weekly newspaper from the PC Magazine people. Pretty sure it was in 1991.
You can probably check the library for back issues.

Hope this helps. If you come across a license server that runs on Unix
and TCP/IP. Please drop me a line.

Brightwork Development has a product called Sitelock that will do this under NetWare.

My opinions, of course. And don't hold me to them.
