[comp.dcom.lans] Remote Boot w/Lantastic and WD8003E/A

P85025@BARILVM.BITNET (Doron Shikmoni) (03/27/91)

I'm testing Lantastic/AI 3.03 and would like to set up for remote boot.
I'm using PS/2 systems with WD8003E/A (well, in fact, IBM Ethernet
Adapter/A, but it's the same thing). The adapter has an IBM boot ROM
installed (and enabled).

I prepared a boot image on the Lantastic Server and tried to activate
remote boot. Nothing happens. I monitored the network and saw some
802.3 packets broadcast from the booted PS/2 - but the server did
not respond.

I noticed that the IBM doc for the adapter speaks about booting in
Netware or Lan Manager environments. So - questions:

1. Am I making sense here? Can I remote boot a PS/2-55SX with
the IBM Ethernet Adapter/A w/boot ROM when the server runs
   Lantastic?

2. Is the boot ROM specific to the type of network I'm booting
from? Not knowing much about remote boot process, I thought
that there's a certain kind of packet that asks for remote
boot, and it's similar with all networks. I may be far off
   here...

3. What do I need to do in order to remote boot in my environment?
Is there a special boot ROM for Netbios networks, for example?
   Will Lantastic allow all this?

Sorry, but I know very little about remote booting and didn't find
anywhere to look. The Lantastic doc is very vague about this issue.

Thanks
Doron

I am not familiar yet with 3.03 but have a lot of experience with 3.02.

Yes, YOU are talking sense here. Lantastic is NOT. THe only boot
ROM that works with LANTASTIC is the one they SELL you and they do
NOT sell one for WD8003 family. They only sell BOOT ROMS for their
own non-ethernet cards.

Do what I did, call them up, yell at them, and wait for someone
to finally do this right!
