Greetings: I have been put on a quest for rn (read news) and mail for the Macintosh. The configuration assumes an Ethernet or other IP connection from the Mac to the rest of a larger LAN using IP. If you have any ideas what newsgroups to subscribe to, FTP sites to look at... please send me a message. Std.Disclaimer: Bo knows DOS, Macintosh is an apple to eat. /------- You have been reached by...-------------+--------------------\ | Raymond Frush at Colorado State University | ...but don't take | | Center for Computer Assisted Engineering | my word for it. | | ARPA frush@longs.LANCE.colostate.edu | | |------------------------------------------------+--------------------| | UUCP:..ncar!boulder!ccncsu!longs.lance.colostate.edu!frush | \------------------------------------------------+--------------------/

There are a couple of packages that you can run on a Mac with Apple's MacTCP/IP (if you can get it to work...) This also requires that your host is running NNTP. One product is call HyperNews. It was written by Harry Chesley of Apple. The main portion of the programme is built on top of HyperCard. The transport portion is XCMDs. It doesn't seem to be on apple.com to ftp. You may need to sniff around for it. The other product I know of is called 'The News'. It was written by Bill Cramer. This is a full application that will used NNTP over MacTCP/IP to and it will support SMTP. The address I have for Bill Cramer: 504 Winter Wood Drive Grapevine, Texas 76051 His email address is: uunet!iex!cramer Tim -- pozar@lns.com Fido: 1:125/555 PaBell: 415-788-3904 USNail: KKSF-FM / 77 Maiden Lane / San Francisco CA 94108

A couple of newgroups which I find informative for that area: comp.mail.misc comp.sys.mac.comm In terms of actual programs: if popservice is an option, Eudora and TechMail are good programs. Eudora is avaible via anonymous FTP from ux1.cso.uiuc.edu:mac/eudora/ in Apple DiskCopy format. For more info: s-dorner@uiuc.edu. TechMail is from MIT, but I don't remember the FTP address.
