I've been doing a little ethernet bridge shopping and I'm amazed to find how much the price has dropped. We've been using low end Retix units for most applications with low horsepower requirements. Now I find I can buy a box that forwards > 10K little packets per second, does SNMP, and is 802.3/802.1/ether ver 2/etc. compliant for about what I'm paying for the Retix. I've only had one field trial, though, and I'm a bit leery since I haven't done a whole lot of footwork yet. Does anyone have a lead or (preferably) direct experience with a bridge(s) which meet the following: SNMP / 802.3 / 802.1 / forward rate > 8K / high filter rate / configurable packet filtering would be nice / under $2,000 (or nearly) What else should I be looking for? I've identified Allied Telesis, Cabletron, and NAT as companies which SEEM to fill the bill. I'd appreciate any comments, facts, narrative anecdotes, or long winded blowing on the topic.
