[comp.dcom.lans] Ungermann-Bass Access One

rzelman@coh.UUCP (R. Zelman) (04/20/91)

We are looking at installing numerous (20-30) intelligent wiring hubs on our
campus. One of the vendors we are looking at is Ungermann-Bass. Does anyone
have expierence with their Access One product? I would appreciate any
responses both favorable and unfavorable. Thanks in advance.

  We have several Ungermann-Bass Access/One network concentrators installed on
our campus (California State University Long Beach). There are several network
modules installed our the Access/One:
  * MaxTalk (16 port AppleTalk module - for Macintosh networks)
  * 10BaseT Ethernet module (ASM-310)
  * Twisted Pair Ethernet module (ASM-300, old version, not 10BaseT)
  We are very happy with UB hardware/software performance and support (except
for the price :-)).  In fact, I just ordered 4 11-slot Access/One
concentrators, 15 MaxTalk modules, and 30 10BaseT modules. The only complain
(beside the high price) is their NetDirector network management software. It
runs on an OS/2 machine which requires 300MB hard disk and 12MB RAM!!! There's
also a text based version available called Network Management Console.
Have fun!
