[comp.dcom.lans] Hughes TCP/IP-LAT portservers - telnet problem

chris@suite.sw.oz.au (Chris Maltby) (05/02/91)

I have run into a problem with this type of portserver box
which seems like it should have a simple solution (apart from
buying some other hardware).

The problem is this. We have a serial (laser) printer connected to
one of the ports on the Hughes box, and we print to it by connecting
to TCP port 700x, which yeilds a TELNET based session connected to
port 'x'. It's TELNET that causes the problem by stripping top
bits, discarding CR chars and blowing its brains out on <0xFF>
bytes. I know I can write code to escape <0xFF>s and to send telnet
options to turn all this behaviour off, but there is surely a way
to get a raw connection (as in rlogin) to the port. It just aint
documented, so far as I can see.

Does anyone out there have any wisdom they could contribute on this
small problem?

Thanks in advance
Chris
