[comp.dcom.lans] FDDI max length?

battle@umbc4.umbc.edu (Rick) (05/08/91)

What is the max distance between to nodes on a FDDI ring
using standard 62.5 fiber?

Thanks in advance,

Rick

The standard itself specifies a max of 2km between 2 adjacent FDDI nodes. However, the practical limitation is the 11dB loss budget (i.e. if you've got lots of connectors between your link and are usoing bypass switches you may not make it to 2km - then again, if you've got no connectors or splices and are not planning on bypass switches you could possibly have a distance of 5, 6 or 7 km given your cable meets specs of about 1db/km loss @ 1300nm). Lots of play depending on your situation.
