[comp.dcom.lans] Let's create comp.protocols.netmanagement

andrew@jhereg.osa.com (Andrew C. Esh) (04/24/91)

Lately I have been reviewing SNMP managers and agents. I have also found
the related RFCs. What I have not found is the newsgroup where SNMP and
similar net management protocols are discussed. Do we need to create one?

comp.protocols.snmp.

Maybe even gateway the snmp list to it, or create
comp.protocols.snmp.tech?

I have received some mail on this suggestion. There are a few comments
about gatewaying the mailing list to the new newsgroup, which I would be
very happy to see. We should also consider where the new newsgroup should
go. One person pointed out that it would be better if we did not limit it
to protocols. How about comp.dcom.lans.management?

At the risk of splitting too fine a hair, we won't be discussing LAN mgt
exclusively, will we? How about comp.dcom.network.management (or some
such variance)?

The only reason I suggested the lans group is because it already exists.
WANs, and anything else, if managable by SNMP or any other protocol,
should be included. What ever will get the discussion going. :-)

Many of the protocols are for WAN's, MAN's, and LAN's. How about
comp.dcom.netmanagement?

Yes! We have a local newsgroup here into which we dump anything
coming in off the snmp or oim mail exploder. It would be great
to have a public newsgroup of the same sort with wider distribution.

schoff@uu.psi.com (Martin Schoffstall) (04/27/91)

Since PSI is currently mastering the snmp mailing list on UUPSI we'll
be happy to gateway a SNMP subgroup between USENET and email. Just
let us know if and when.
