Hi,

I've gotten a request to provide 4 asynchronous connections from
an Appletalk to our PBX data switching environment. The basic idea
is that folks now connected to the Appletalk want to vie for 4
ports to draw a prompt from the PBX dataswitch.

I assume I need a terminal server which speaks Appletalk but I
haven't done much work with Apple stuff in general and I don't know
what the options and obstacles might be. Does Apple provide terminal
emulation sitting on top of Appletalk? Can anyone recommend a box
to hang off the local network to provide the service?
I only need 4 connections to start but I think its safe to presume
that the port requirement will double before I can get the purchase
order through (sigh...).

The configuration is roughly presented below with the ?? representing
the alleged terminal server or whatever.

Shiva makes a device called a NetSerial that will probably work. It allows
you to plug in any RS232 device to the NetSerial. The NetSerial then makes
it available across the AppleTalk network. A user connects to the device
through the Chooser by selecting the NetSerial icon. It costs about $300
from mail order houses.

Shiva can be reached at 617-252-6300.
