Hello from sunny and warm England (I am not kidding); Question for DEC-NET and bridge/router experts! We have a good size network of almost 400 nodes, spread over a campus of about 1.5 Km. As the net grows there is an opportunity to install some B/Routers and isolate some of the traffic. We are now thinking about sub-nets and a backbone. The majority of the nodes are DEC-200 terminal servers running LAT. The VAXen that they access are spread all over the site. There are also some Novell servers, both stand-alone PC types, and VAX servers. Just to keep life interesting, most desk-top systems are Apple MAC's of some type. When considering connecting a B/Router, we need to investigate it's multi-protocol capabilities. In the DEC-NET area we have opened a mysterious box and cannot seem to get a complete answer. DEC states, that DEC-NET address are assigned to boxes and independent of the number of network interfaces. Our B/Router vendor agrees, but states that there are "special circumstances" where a B/Router needs a separate DEC-NET address for each side. My question is, under what conditions will I require a separate DEC-NET address for each port on the B/Router?? I can only think of one, and that is connecting two separate networks, that have identical DEC-NET address' previously assigned. True/False??
