[comp.dcom.lans] Accton 10baseT Transceivers

robelr@ucs.indiana.edu (Allen Robel) (05/11/91)

FYI - the documentation that comes with the Accton Acc-10
is incorrect in one small point. On page 3 it shows that
the SQE function is disabled by default. This is true,
but the jumper setting for the disabled state is shown
in Figure 3-1 to have the pins on J1 unjumpered when in
actuality, SQE is turned off by jumpering the pins on J1
(which is the way the unit ships).

We discovered this when we tried connecting a DEC 100
Communications server with this guy. It didn't work
so we tried a David Systems transceiver (with SQE on)
and it *did* work. We then tried the same David transceiver
with SQE off and it didn't work (unlike the Accton, the
David transceiver has an SQE LED so its apparant when
SQE is on or off).

So, after unjumpering the pins on J1 of the Accton (turning
SQE on) the DEC 100 is humming right along. This is actually
the first instance of *anything* I've ever hooked up really
caring whether SQE was on or off which leads me to believe
that most software would go on transmitting even though
the collision detect circuitry in the transceiver had died.
