We currently operate a thin-ether based LAN of 25 PC/XTs served by a 386/25 running Banyan Vines. We are considering increasing the number of stations from 25 to 49 (the additional 24 stations to be 286 based). I would be interested in hearing of experiences of people who currently operate Banyan LANs with at least this many client PCs. Are there bottlenecks with either the server machine or the ethernet? Will summarize if responses merit.

Will summarize if responses merit. -- Theoretically, you can have 'unlimited' number of clients on a Banyan network. We have 22 Banyan servers (DTS, BNS, VINES386) and 2 Novell servers (running CDROM applications) on our campus. There are approximately 600 users using our Banyan network (Students, Instructor, Staff). One of our VINES 386 server in the Library computer lab has approximately 100 users. It is an Ethernet LAN on 286/12mhz and 386/20mhz. So far, we have no complains about the speed. I highly recommend to install more memory on your server and expand the file buffer and communication buffer space. Also, try to keep the number of simultaineous users down to approximately 40 per server. Hope this helps. -Steve ____ _ _ // // _//_ // Steve La ((__ // ___ _ ___ // __ Network Manager )) // //__) // / //__) // ____) stevela@csulb.edu //___// //_/ //__ \\_/ //__ //___/ ((__/_ (213) 985-4750 ______________________________________________________________________ Calstate Univ.
