[comp.periphs] battery-powered printers

david@varian.UUCP (David Brown) (01/20/87)

A friend of mine, who lives way outback in West Virginia in a cabin
with no electricity, owns a Tandy 102 (I was quite surprised; she
is the last person I would expect to own a computer).

She is now looking for a battery powered printer to go with it without
much luck. Someone gave her some names -- Axonix, Hush, and TT Express --
but she hasn't been able to track anything down. I found some info for
her on Axonix in a product guide.

Does anyone have info on these or other battery-powered printers?
(addresses, cost, compatibility with the TRS 102, recommendations,
places to purchase, either mail order or stores -- Virginia, D.C.,
N.C. etc). Any tips would be appreciated; I'll forward them to my
friend (she's not on the net -- the nearest phone is 3 miles away).

Thanks in advance

I like the Axonix. A friend uses it with a Toshiba 1100+ and says it's
great. I particularly like the feature that the batteries are installed
in the core of the paper roller. While this makes for a little longer time
to change batteries, it reduces the size and profile of the printer
considerably. It is about half the height and same footprint as the HP
ThinkJet, and it uses the same print head cartridges as the HP printer.
It has full Epson emulation, and the print quality is pretty reasonable.
Price is reasonable -- $449 list, though you can probably pick it up for
about $375 - 400 if you shop around.

I don't know about availability in the DC area or mail order, though it
should be pretty widely available -- Kodak is providing the venture money
to these guys.

The HP ThinkJet is available in two battery powered versions:

2225P Centronics (the version used with the IRS/Zenith laptop)
    2225B HP-IL (would require an HP-IL to RS-232C converter)
