[comp.periphs] IBM compatible hard disk controllers

rspector@brahms.Berkeley.EDU.UUCP (02/05/87)

I am in the market for a cheap (CHEAP!) hard disk, and would like to buy one
except for one hitch. I have PC/IX version 1, an old verion of UNIX distributed
by IBM. The manual for the program (21 disks) requires that I have a hard disk
with the IBM disk controller. Evidently, this software is very selective, and
may not run on other manufacturer's hard disk controllers.

A couple of years ago, Byte magazine published an article about installing hard
disks into PC's to give them the equivalent performance of an XT. As an acid
test for compatibility, they decided to try to run PC/IX version 1 on their
newly converted model to see which controller would is the most compatible.
Only one passed the test---the Xebec hard disk controller.

Unfortunately, the Xebec controller is now rather scarce. Most mail order
companies carry the Western Digital Controller. I really want to run this
software, without forking over major dollars for the IBM controller, and I can't
seem to find the Xebec. Can anybody suggest where to locate it, or are there
other controllers which will do the job?

Many thanks to those who can help me out.

PC/IX works also with the DTC 5150BX harddisk controller and this controller
is >99% compatible.
